ABOUT ME

Miriam M. Gallardo, a native of New York City and raised in The Bronx, is a dancer, choreographer, and artistic collaborator in the performing arts. Her passion for dance and connection to her heritage has shaped her unique style, which draws influence from Afro-Caribbean elements while embracing urban grooves. Miriam's journey in dance began at the age of 7 when she joined the youth group organization La Ramitas de Borinquen in The South Bronx, where she started her dance studies in Bomba y Plena. She further expanded her technique by learning Mambo On2/Salsa on 2 under the guidance of David Melendez, a pioneer in the New York City Salsa Scene and the director of the first children's salsa dance studio in The Bronx.

During her college years, Miriam actively contributed to promoting diversity and inclusion through Latin dance workshops organized by Spectrum at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York. This experience fueled her involvement in the flourishing salsa scene in the upstate NY area. Now back in New York City, Miriam continues her training, specializing in Latin street jazz and exploring various styles within the Afro-diaspora. She finds joy in witnessing the growing recognition of dance styles that were not popularized in studios during her upbringing and how today's dance spaces encourage individuals of all ages to delve deeper into the movements and their historical significance.

Miriam has achieved remarkable milestones throughout her career. Notably, she served as the dance choreographer for the internationally acclaimed and award-winning movie "Roma: The Silent Film." Her talent and expertise also led her to become a teaching artist for the Steps Beyond Foundation Association: STEPS on Broadway, where she created a Latin Dance Program catered to seniors, inspired by her late mother, Miriam Gonzalez.

In 2022, Miriam had the opportunity to travel to South Africa, where she taught and performed various dance styles such as Bachata, Bomba, and Mambo. This experience allowed her to share her passion for dance on an international platform while embracing different cultures.

Miriam's journey in the performing arts continues to evolve, and her dedication to promoting cultural exchange and artistic education remains at the core of her endeavors.
